Recent research estimates that nearly 40 million people in the United States avoid dental appointments because of some form of dental anxiety or phobia — that’s about 15% of Americans. For patients with dental phobia, extreme fear may make going to the dentist seem nearly impossible. Dental phobia may show signs such as:
- Feelings of tension in the body before an examination
- Trouble sleeping in anticipation of an examination
- Increasing nervousness while waiting for your appointment to begin
- Seeing dental instruments or hearing the normal sounds of a dental office induces anxiety
- Panic or fear sets in when the dentist begins examining your mouth
It’s normal for patients to be worried or stressed about dental appointments, but when that fear keeps people away from regular preventive cleanings and exams, it can negatively impact their dental health. At The Stein Center for Advanced Dentistry, we work to ensure each patient has a comfortable and relaxing experience in our office. If you are worried, anxious, or fearful about visiting the dentist, sedation dentistry can offer benefits that will put you at ease in the dentist chair.
The Benefits of Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry involves the careful use of sedative medications to ease patient’s discomfort during routine or invasive dental procedures. The medications given by Drs. Stein and Weiss reduce feelings of anxiety and allow your body to relax. This also increases the numbing effect of anesthesia. It also prevents your muscles from becoming stiff or sore from spending extended periods of time in one position. Sedative medications will also blur the sensation of time. This can help patients that may be undergoing invasive or multiple treatments at one appointment.
Sedative medications can also reduce a patient’s gag reflex, which allows for a more comfortable experience for the patient, and helps the dentist complete the procedure safely. Sedatives also keep patient movements to a minimum; without sedatives, it’s normal for patients to “squirm” or shift positions in the chair during long or uncomfortable procedures. With less disruptions during the procedure, the dentist can complete treatment more quickly and efficiently.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide, referred to as laughing gas, is a commonly-used dental sedative medication. Once inhaled, it immediately renders a state of relaxation and mild euphoria. It also dulls sensitivity to pain. Nitrous oxide is effective and safe for nearly every patient, but it’s important all pertinent health history information is shared with Dr. Stein or Dr. Weiss before receiving sedation medication. Following treatment, pure oxygen is inhaled to neutralize lingering effects of nitrous oxide. Once breathing oxygen for just a few minutes, you will be alert and returned to a normal state. Patients are even able to drive themselves home.
