Night Guards

Protecting your teeth can sometimes call for protective devices like mouth guards or night guards. If you suffer from teeth clenching or grinding, or are wanting to protect your teeth during high-action activities, our Skokie practice can custom fit a comfortable, removable device for you.

Protection for Your Teeth in Skokie, IL

woman sleeping with a night guardUnconscious grinding at night while asleep is referred to as bruxism by dentists and oral surgeons. Bruxism is a serious problem that can lead to tooth decay, cracked teeth, and increased sensitivity, in addition to potentially damaging your jaw. If you believe you grind your teeth at night, contact our office to be fitted for a custom protective device. The sooner you call, the quicker you can protect your teeth from bruxism’s damaging effects.

Bruxism Symptoms

How do you know if you suffer from teeth grinding or clenching at night? According to the American Dental Association, approximately 10-15% of Americans suffer from bruxism. Typically, our patients have one or more of the following symptoms associated with teeth grinding or clenching:

  • Loud teeth grinding (possibly loud enough to wake up your partner at night)
  • Chipped or loose teeth
  • Increased sensitivity in teeth
  • Jaw and facial muscles that feel “tired,” tight, or sore
  • Jaw or face pain
  • Tension-type headaches in the morning
  • Feeling tired or not well-rested after waking

What are night guards?

A night guard is a dental appliance designed to be worn while sleeping. The removable device creates a barrier in between the bottom and top teeth to prevent unconscious clenching or teeth grinding while asleep. Dr. Stein or Dr. Weiss will take impressions of your teeth to custom fit your night guard and ensure optimal comfort and safety. Some night guard solutions can be purchased over the counter, and while they also can protect your teeth from signs of wear, irritation of the gums, enamel erosion, and jaw pain, the night guards from The Stein Center for Advanced Dentistry are made of a higher quality material and will last longer. The custom fit from a night guard created in our dental labs will produce a more comfortable fit, making it easier to wear at night.

Protecting Your Teeth with a Custom Mouth Guard

Our practice can also create a custom mouth guard for you or your family members participating in contact sports or extreme activities like mountain biking or skiing. Much like a night guard, a mouth guard is a removable dental appliance designed to be worn during contact sports or other activities where risk of injury or trauma to the mouth is present. Drs. Stein and Weiss can create a mouth guard that fits seamlessly with your smile, so you don’t have to worry about it getting in the way of your next adventure. Preparation now will keep your teeth safe from potential injury or trauma in the future.

Schedule an appointment to be fitted for your custom night guard or mouth guard

If you desire a custom mouth guard, or suspect you may have issues with teeth grinding, contact our office for an appointment. At your appointment, Dr. Stein or Dr. Weiss will discuss additional methods to help eliminate or discourage night-time grinding. This may include skipping chewing gum, or eliminating alcohol and caffeine from your diet, as these increase the risks of grinding. Reach a member of our staff at (847)676-3500 to schedule your appointment.

Dr. Abraham E. Stein

From start to finish, a fabulous experience (sounds like an oxymoron when talking about "dental visits", but actually true). From stepping in and encountering a superbly run front desk and incredible dental hygienist (whom I have seen for 20+ years), great dental assistants, and of course the master himself -- Dr. Stein. He has done amazing things to my 65+ year-old choppers such that they are in the top tier of my peers. Need I say more?
