man smiling without any crooked teeth

Do you have “that tooth”? The one that sticks just a little too far out? Or maybe it overlaps the one right next to it. Maybe you have two of those teeth. It’s normal for teeth to not be perfectly straight and aligned, but for aesthetic reasons, we understand the desire to find a solution for “that tooth.” That’s why Dr. Abraham Stein and Dr. Zachary Weiss at The Stein Center for Advanced Dentistry is proud to offer several aesthetic dentistry treatments for patients who are dealing with slightly crooked or misaligned teeth. With today’s modern dentistry innovations, crooked teeth don’t necessarily mean the brackets and wires of traditional braces. What are veneers?

Think of veneers as covers for your teeth. Fabricated from very thin slivers of medical-grade ceramic, veneers are applied to the front teeth visible in your smile.

Why would I choose veneers?

Veneers are a popular aesthetic dentistry treatment because they camouflage a variety of aesthetic issues in otherwise healthy and functional teeth quickly. Veneers are usually a treatment of choice for those patients who have aesthetic issues that professional whitening or bonding cannot fix. They offer some of the most dramatic smile improvements and are completely custom to your current (and desired) smile.

How can veneers fix my crooked teeth?

Orthodontics like traditional braces and Invisalign® are great for addressing crooked teeth in combination with malocclusion (or bite problems) that stem from the upper and lower jaw not coming together properly. However, for patients without bite problems who simply desire a more aesthetic smile, veneers can offer positive results in just a matter of weeks –rather than months or years needed in traditional orthodontic work.

Dr. Stein or Dr. Weiss will first prep your teeth before veneers can be applied. This may require shaping and resizing of teeth –especially those which may be overlapping or sticking out from other teeth. This process won’t be painful, as local anesthetics will help reduce any mild discomfort.

What else should I know?

It’s important to note that porcelain veneers are usually considered a permanent treatment. This means that once placed, veneers should be maintained in order to provide maximum protection for your teeth. Due to the enamel that must be removed during the placement process, teeth that are treated with veneers can be more vulnerable to damage if the veneers are removed. However, teeth with veneers remain healthy and functional; the treatment process does not damage your natural teeth. For some patients, minimal-prep veneers offer an even slimmer veneer option that requires less enamel to be removed. These are not right for every patient, but Dr. Stein or Dr. Weiss can help you understand your specific treatment options during your aesthetic dentistry consultation.

When to See a Prosthodontist

The need to restore or replace teeth goes beyond what your family dentist can provide. A prosthodontist offers the expertise for a range of dental restorative issues. If your dentist has recommended advanced dental treatment, then you can find an experienced prosthodontist in the Skokie, IL area. The Stein Center for Advanced Dentistry offers all the procedures to improve your smile and your dental health.

Replacing Lost Teeth

Lost teeth can do more than impact your self-confidence. Missing teeth can cause jaw bone loss, tooth decay and receding gums. You may not realize that your speech and even the shape of your face can be altered by missing teeth. Dr. Stein and his friendly, professional staff can consult you on the best strategies for replacing teeth.

Dr. Stein may suggest dental implants as a permanent solution to one or more missing teeth. Along with replacing a gap in your smile, implants can also help prevent the loss of bone, and make eating and speaking more comfortable.

The Stein Center for Advanced Dentistry also provides dentures as a cost-effective option over implants. Dentures are bridges are commonly recommended alternatives if your existing teeth or gums are not healthy enough for implants. Modern dentures can be made to match the look of your teeth, so you can regain your full smile. Whatever Dr. Stein’s recommendation may be, he will ensure you get that bold smile back and with it a healthy and comfortable set of teeth.

Improving the Strength of Your Teeth

With age, teeth begin to weaken. Dr. Stein can determine when a tooth is losing integrity long before it’s at risk for breaking. Some of your teeth may have already begun to show signs of damage. Cracks and fissures in the enamel not only can lead to chips and broken teeth, they also have a greater potential for encouraging tooth decay. Dr. Stein may recommend a crown to reinforce a weakening tooth or conceal a crack. Porcelain crowns restore the strength and look of pearly whites and can be an effective proactive measure for older adult dental care. As an experienced prosthodontist, Dr. Stein can take steps to help keep your teeth from breaking down.

Innovative Ways to Smile Better

You may pay a visit to a prosthodontist even when you do not require serious dental restoration. As a respected cosmetic dentist, Dr. Steins also offers ways to renew your smile, so you feel better about yourself.

Porcelain or composite veneers can bring back the brilliant whiteness to your teeth. Dr. Stein may recommend veneers when common whitening agents haven’t succeeded in removing stains or discoloration. Veneers are lasting and stain resistant and enhance the brightness of your smile in just a few office visits.

Chipped or damaged teeth can also discourage a confident smile. However, they too can be easily repaired using dental bonding. Dr. Stein can use a versatile composite filler to fill in chipped teeth or smooth out cracks in enamel. Dr. Stein can also repair excessive spacing between teeth using this procedure. In some instances, he may recommend bonding over a veneer to cover up discoloration as a better option.  Dr. Stein always looks for what’s best for his patients. His goals are to give you the smile that makes you happy using the best methods possible.

Give Your Teeth a Good “Spring Cleaning”

Give Your Teeth a Good “Spring Cleaning" with a Visit to Your Skokie IL dentistA good spring cleaning does your home good; the fresh, clean spaces after those dreary winter months can do wonders for improving your outlook on life. So why can’t we extend the idea of spring cleaning to every area of our lives — including our oral health? At The Stein Center for Advanced Dentistry, we’ve rounded up our tips for giving your oral care routine a spring cleaning. There’s a lot you can do to freshen up your teeth and gums and give yourself a reason to smile this spring.

Spring is a great time to check in with your Skokie, IL dentist to make sure your teeth are strong and healthy before the summer months bring vacations, travel and outdoor adventures. If it’s been more than six months since your last cleaning and exam with Dr. Abraham Stein or Dr. Zachary Weiss, schedule your next appointment by calling our practice at 847-676-3500.

Toss that Brush

We’ll take a wild guess and say that’s it’s probably been a while since you last replaced your manual toothbrush. We recommend replacing toothbrushes with every season, or every three months, to ensure your brush stays firm and strong to effectively remove as much plaque as possible. Frayed, bent or damaged bristles can mean gum irritation and less cleaning power—two things you shouldn’t be letting slide in your daily brushing routine.

If you’re looking to really get a fresh start, consider investing in an electric toothbrush that can make effective cleaning easier than ever. If you do decide to spend a little extra, make sure to review this list of powered toothbrushes approved by the American Dental Association.

Choose Fluoridated Toothpaste

Check your toothpaste ingredients: is fluoride listed? More and more natural toothpastes are hitting the market, many of which lack the key ingredient fluoride. This compound is found in tap water in many areas of the country, and in many traditional toothpastes because of its ability to help strengthen tooth enamel and keep tooth decay at bay. Since many patients have water filters and may not regularly drink tap water, having fluoridated toothpaste is an important way to give your enamel the boost it needs to deflect the corrosive effects of harmful oral bacteria. In small amounts, fluoride in the form of toothpaste is safe for adults and older children. Just remember to always spit it out!

Give Your Mouth a Fresh Start

The best way to spring-clean your oral health? Receive a dental cleaning from our team at The Stein Center for Advanced Dentistry. Though the Christmas, New Year, and Valentine’s Day holidays are behind us, your teeth may be holding on to tartar buildup and plaque accumulated from the holiday indulgences. Tartar, or hardened plaque, can only be removed by a dental professional – it cannot be removed from brushing or flossing at home. Regularly removing tartar greatly improves your teeth’s ability to fight off decay, and gives your mouth a clean slate.

While at your cleaning, consider giving your teeth an extra boost by opting for a fluoride treatment or dental sealant. Both are preventive treatments that can help your “spring cleaning” last even longer.

Dr. Abraham E. Stein

From start to finish, a fabulous experience (sounds like an oxymoron when talking about "dental visits", but actually true). From stepping in and encountering a superbly run front desk and incredible dental hygienist (whom I have seen for 20+ years), great dental assistants, and of course the master himself -- Dr. Stein. He has done amazing things to my 65+ year-old choppers such that they are in the top tier of my peers. Need I say more?
